Hello everyone! This week I am adding a few great costume ideas to go with the fabulous Little Red make up that I posted in my "makeup" section last week! The idea of this post is to give everyone several ideas for a Little Red Riding Hood costume. There are many different interpretations of this so feel free to adjust the look to fit your style! I tried to pick stores that are most common amoung my friend group because they are easily accessible, and, from my experience, hassle free to order online. However, you should make sure to check the measurements on each site before ordering anything because the fit changes from store to store! In addition, because everyone has different price ranges I tried to post more than one link, so you have several options to choose from- so don't worry if you're on a tight budget!

I like to create costumes from actual clothing stores because I hate wasting a costume you may never wear again. This way you can reuse your clothes for future "everyday" outfits!

The Cape No matter what you decide to wear, a Little Red Riding Hood costume cannot be complete without a red cape. It's in the title and it has a huge meaning in the stories as well! So if you are doing Little Red, this is a MUST!

All of the capes I found were from a site called Etsy, but many stores like Walmart and Amazon will most likely add some for the Halloween season.

  1. The next one I don’t recommend unless you are an avid cosplayer. There is a huge price jump, but I wanted to include it because it is actually a very beautiful cape. Because it is so expensive I suggest only buying this is you know you will be using the cape multiple times. This is also perfect for anyone who is planning on entering contests! $265.00 https://www.etsy.com/listing/195810889/little-red-riding-hood-costume-for-women?ref=market

The Basket If you are doing a Little Red costume you are going to need her signature basket. It's where she holds her goodies for grandma! Not to mention, it's perfect to hold your belongings in, ladies! No need to carry around a purse with this costume! I only have one option for purchase right now, but I would keep an eye out for baskets during the Fall and Christmas seasons! Michaels Arts & Crafts usually has one or two isles of baskets during this time, so plan ahead! They have a few on their website now, but they vary in style depending on the season.

The next item you will need for a Little Red costume is a white half apron. You don’t necessarily NEED this for the costume, but I recommend it for anyone that is trying imitate Little Red Riding Hood as she is depicted in the Grimms Fairy Tales and Little Red Cap by Perrault.

This one is not the cheapest, so if you can find one in a dollar store that might be a better idea! However, if you have Amazon Prime you do not have to pay for shipping. Unfortunately, it’s rather hard to find a plain white half apron online that’s not meant for little girls dress up.

The next part of the costume I have seen done three ways:

  1. a black corset with a peasant shirt under it, paired with a black skirt

  2. a black corset with a peasant shirt under it, paired with a red skirt

  3. a plain black dress

The plain black dress is better for someone who is on a budget because you don't’ need to buy as many items and you can definitely reuse the dress again! However, if you are like me and love to take advantage of any opportunity to wear a corset, I say go this route! Not to mention you can definitely use the skirt again.

Black Corsets Everyone has their own preference (overbust vs underbust) so I have three very different options for you to choose from depending on your style. The prices of these vary depending on size so you will have to click each link in order to see a price.

  1. The first is an underbust with backing http://www.amazon.com/Charmian%C2%AE-Burlesque-Brocade-Underbust-XXXXXX-Large/dp/B00P8U6Q4G/ref=sr_1_24?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1455511798&sr=1-24&nodeID=7141123011&keywords=black+corset&refinements=p_85%3A2470955011

  2. The second is an overbust http://www.amazon.com/Bslingerie-Womens-Cincher-Corset-Brocade/dp/B0093KV01G/ref=sr_1_9?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1455511798&sr=1-9&nodeID=7141123011&keywords=black+corset&refinements=p_85%3A2470955011

  3. The last is a plain underbust http://www.amazon.com/Alivila-Y-Fashion-Underbust-Corset-G-String-Black-S/dp/B00D1R820O/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1455511639&sr=8-2&keywords=black+waist+corset

White Peasant Shirts

Its very easy to find a white peasant shirt. They sell them in almost any store, so if you have a favorite store checkout the store’s search feature to see if them have one! I am just posting two, and they are very different styles. However, I think both of these styles would work great!

  1. The first is from Forever 21. This is a very popular store, and a great store- if you have the patience to sort through their clothes. I personally don't have the patience to do this unless I get to the mall when it first opens. So if you’re like me, get there early, or bring a friend to help you search the store! $22.90 http://www.forever21.com/Product/Product.aspx?br=F21&category=top_blouses&productid=2000181587

  2. The second is from Macys. I actually prefer to shop in Macy’s because you can use coupons most of the time, and they have a great return policy. So if you can find something here, look for coupons or promo codes online before buying! $89.50 http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/denim-supply-ralph-lauren-ruffled-peasant-top?ID=1142896&CategoryID=255&LinkType=&swatchColor=Antique%20Cream#fn=PAGEINDEX%3D1%26sp%3D1%26spc%3D47%26slotId%3D40%26kws%3Dwhite%20peasant%20top

Long Black Skirt and Long Red Skirt Both of these skirts are from Modcloth. If you have never shopped on their site before then I am going to give you some great advice right now: Do NOT buy anything full price!!! I cannot stress this enough. Unless you absolutely need the product ASAP, then please wait at least a few days to buy the skirt. Modcloth has sales almost every week. In fact, as I’m writing this they are having a 40% flash sale. So please keep that in mind. They also offer a discount for new customers if you sign up for their emails. You do need to spend a certain amount, but it’s worth it if you find other products you like as well. Unfortunately the images I'm posting are not of great quality. However, if you click on the link you will be able to see clear crisp pictures on their site- with the added bonus of shoppers wearing their purchases as well!

Plain Black Dress Finally, for those of you who would like to just wear a dress I have two looks for you to try out. One is a bit more elegant than the other, so I would base my decision on what you will get the most use out of.

That's all folks! Hope you enjoyed this weeks segment, and remember to check out last week's posts under “makeup” to find a Little Red makeup tutorial. I hope your costumes come out great!

Stay tuned for more Little Red! I will be posting a segment on the tale of Little Red Riding Hood, and there will be a crafting segment as well. Check out some awesome cake ideas for the perfect fairy tale themed party, or try making a cape yourself!

The End.
